St. Mary of the Assumption

Hockessin, DE

St. Mary of the Assumption Parish is located in Hockessin, Delaware. Founded in 1772 by Father John Lewis, S.J., the parish has grown alongside the nation. The site was originally purchased from Samuel Lyle by Father Matthias Manners, S.J., with the influence of Cornelius Hollohan. Father Rosseter built a log chapel on this land, which served as both a residence and church for many years. Later pastors, including Father Charles Whalen and Father Patrick Kenny, continued to develop the parish through construction and ministry. The legacy of St. Mary's spans two and a half centuries, rooted in faith and community service.
