St. Paul Parish in Salem, Ohio is part of the Youngstown Diocese. Founded around 1853 by Irish Catholic laborers, the parish began with Masses held in private homes until 1869 when Father Eli W.J. Lindesmith officially named it St. Paul and designated January 25 as its patronal feast day. The first permanent church was built on East Main Street (now State Street) in 1880, dedicated by Bishop Richard Gilmour in 1886. Under Father Clement Treiber's leadership, the parish continued to grow, adding an extension in 1887 to accommodate more worshippers. Today, St. Paul remains a vibrant Roman Catholic community committed to continuing Christ’s mission through education, example, and service.
