History

Erected on April 20, 1934, the Diocese of Viedma (Dioecesis Viedmensis) lies within the Ecclesiastical Province of Bahía Blanca, suffragan to that metropolitan archdiocese. As of 2006 its bishop was Monsignor Esteban María Laxague, a Salesian of Don Bosco, whom Pope John Paul II appointed on October 31, 2002. Before him, HVRE Marcelo Angiolo Melani served as bishop from June 28, 1995 until 2002, when Laxague succeeded him.
