History

In the eastern interior of Sicily, the Diocese of Caltagirone (Latin: Dioecesis Calatayeronensis) traces its territory to lands that before 1816 belonged to the diocese of Siracusa. From 1816 to 1844 it stood under the archdiocese of Monreale, then passed in 1844 to the new archdiocese of Siracusa, and in the Sicilian diocesan reorganization of 2000 became a suffragan of the archdiocese of Catania. The bishop's seat is the Basilica Cathedral of S. Giuliano in the city of Caltagirone.
