History

In the commune of Campobasso, capital of the province of the same name in the Molise region of Southern Italy, sits the Archdiocese of Campobasso-Boiano (Latin: Archidioecesis Campobassensis-Boianensis). The see's modern shape took form in stages: in 1927 the episcopal seat and bishop's residence of the diocese of Boiano moved to Campobasso, the diocese taking the name Boiano-Campobasso and remaining ecclesiastically suffragan to the archdiocese of Benevento. It was raised to an archdiocese in 1973 and became a metropolitan see in 1976.
