The Diocese of Lausanne, Geneva and Fribourg is a Latin Church diocese in Switzerland formed in 1821 by the merger of the sees of Lausanne and Geneva, renamed to add Fribourg in 1924. It is an exempt diocese immediately subject to the Holy See, with its seat at Fribourg Cathedral. The bishop since 2011 is Charles Morerod, O.P.

History

In Switzerland, where every see answers directly to the Holy See rather than belonging to an ecclesiastical province, the Latin Catholic Diocese of Lausanne, Geneva and Fribourg (Latin: Dioecesis Lausannensis, Genevensis et Friburgensis) holds exempt status. Its component sees once had metropolitan ties elsewhere: until 1801 the original diocese of Lausanne stood under the archdiocese of Besançon, while Geneva had been a suffragan of the archdiocese of Vienne.
