Latin-rite apostolic vicariate covering the Vaupes department in southeastern Colombia, seated at Mitu. Established as an apostolic prefecture on 9 June 1949 by Pope Pius XII from the Apostolic Vicariate of Los Llanos de San Martin, it was elevated in 1989 as the Apostolic Vicariate of Mitu-Puerto Inirida and took its present form in 1996 when Inirida was split off. Its seat is the Cathedral Maria Inmaculada in Mitu.

History

A Latin pre-diocesan jurisdiction of the Catholic Church in Colombia, the Vicariate Apostolic of Mitú (Latin: Apostolicus Vicariatus Mituensis) is exempt, answering immediately to the Holy See rather than belonging to any ecclesiastical province, and depends on the missionary Roman Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples. Its cathedral and episcopal see, the Catedral María Inmaculada, dedicated to Mary Immaculate, stands in the city of Mitú in Vaupés Department.
