  Father Philip DeVous shared reflections on how modern indifference to God often stems from constant distraction. Writing for the Diocese of Covington, DeVous noted that people frequently avoid rejecting Jesus Christ directly, instead creating an idol of the savior that approves of their personal whims. DeVous explained that the world provides many distractions that lead to a lack of interest in Jesus Christ and spiritual matters. This process can result in a blindness to the presence of Christ. He suggested that individuals should ask themselves daily questions to avoid this indifference and maintain the priority of Jesus Christ.

• Benedictine Sister Kimberly Porter elected president of the Monastic Congregation of St. Scholastica

  Sister Kimberly Porter, a Benedictine sister from St. Walburg Monastery in Villa Hills, has been elected president of the Monastic Congregation of St. Scholastica. Delegates from 17 Benedictine communities across the United States voted to elect her following a period of nomination and discernment. The Monastic Congregation of St. Scholastica is one of three congregations for Benedictine sisters in the United States. While the 17 member communities follow a shared constitution, each maintains its own unique monastic norms. Sister Porter will end her full-time work as a family and child therapist to manage the needs of the congregation. She stated that her decision to accept the role followed a period of prayerful discernment and a sense of peace regarding the call.

• Parish Missionary Disciple trainings return for the fall — laity invited to participate in workshops

  The Diocese of Covington will hold Parish Missionary Disciple workshops this October and November at St. Timothy, Union, and St. Agnes, Ft. Wright. These interactive sessions, which are open to the laity, follow a pastoral plan created during the diocese's With One Heart planning process. The training uses a framework from the Catholic Leadership Institute to help parishioners gain the knowledge and confidence to discuss their faith and answer questions from others. Deacon Kevin Cranley, who is helping organize the sessions at St. Timothy, said the program helps people talk openly about their beliefs and fulfill the call to bring others to Christ. Previous workshops were held at Mother of God Parish, Covington and St. Mary Parish, Alexandria, reaching a core group of around 200 parishioners in 2024. Registration remains open for the upcoming sessions at St. Timothy and St. Agnes, and interested participants can find details on the respective parish websites.
