History

With its episcopal see at Regensburg, this Latin Church diocese (Latin: Dioecesis Ratisbonensis; German: Bistum Regensburg) covers parts of northeastern Bavaria across 14,665 km2 and stands subordinate to the archbishop of Munich and Freising. As of 2014 it counted 1.20 million Catholics, 70% of its total population. Saint Peter in Regensburg is the main diocesan church, and Rudolf Voderholzer is the current bishop. The diocese is organized into eight regions and 33 deaneries containing 769 parishes.
