History

Founded in 741, the see of Würzburg (Latin: Dioecesis Herbipolensis) is a Latin Church diocese of the Catholic Church in Germany, situated in Lower Franconia around the city of Würzburg, with the bishop seated at Würzburg Cathedral. Its temporal power ended entirely after the Napoleonic wars; the earlier civil history belongs to the Prince-Bishopric of Würzburg.
