Latin-rite metropolitan archdiocese in Ecuador's capital, established as the Diocese of Quito on 8 January 1545 and elevated to archdiocese on 13 January 1848. Its seat is the Catedral Primada de la Virgen Asunta al Cielo in Quito, and its suffragans are Ambato, Guaranda, Ibarra, Latacunga, Riobamba and Tulcan. Archbishop Alfredo Jose Espinoza Mateus, S.D.B., has led it since April 2019.

History

The Catholic archdiocese of Ecuador's capital city traces its beginnings to 8 January 1545, when the Diocese of Quito was established. Pope Pius IX raised it to archdiocesan rank on January 13, 1848.
