Latin-rite diocese covering La Rioja, Spain, originating as the Diocese of Calahorra in the 5th century and reorganized in its present combined form on 9 March 1959. It is a suffragan of the Archdiocese of Pamplona y Tudela, with cathedrals at Calahorra and Santo Domingo de la Calzada and a co-cathedral at Logrono. Bishop Santos Montoya Torres was appointed on 12 January 2022.

History

Three cities, Calahorra, Santo Domingo de la Calzada, and Logroño, anchor the Diocese of Calahorra and La Calzada-Logroño (Latin: Dioecesis Calaguritanus et Calceatensis-Lucroniensis), a Latin diocese of the Catholic Church within the ecclesiastical province of Pamplona y Tudela in Spain. Each of the three cities has its own cathedral.

  • Pope Leo XIV calls for protection of migrant minors

    Pope Leo XIV called for the protection and assistance of migrant children during the 112th World Day of the Migrant and the Refugee, held on September 27, 2026. Addressing the general audience in the Vatican, the Pope urged everyone to take responsibility for the lives of young people who face violence, torture, exploitation, and traumatic conditions while forced to leave their homes. The Holy See selected the theme "Even one of these little ones" for this year's observance to highlight the vulnerability of children and adolescents in global migration movements. In his message, Pope Leo XIV stated that every child possesses infinite dignity and called on people to look beyond statistics to recognize the individual history and face of every minor. According to Agenzia SIR, nearly 53 million children are fleeing their homes due to conflict, violence, and climate disasters. This group includes approximately 19.1 million refugees or asylum seekers, 29.4 million internally displaced persons due to war, and 4.4 million displaced by environmental emergencies. Additionally, at least 37 million international migrant minors move due to poverty. The agency reported that many of these children face human trafficking, forced labor, recruitment by armed groups, or arbitrary detention, while girls face a high risk of sexual abuse and gender-based violence.

  • Diocese of Calahorra y La Calzada-Logroño culminates Pastoral Penitenciaria Week

    Bishop Santos Montoya presided over a Mass at the Centro Penitenciario de Logroño on September 24 to conclude the Semana de Pastoral Penitenciaria. The event coincided with the feast of Nuestra Señora de la Merced, the patron saint of people deprived of liberty and of Instituciones Penitenciarias. The week of activities, held from September 17 to September 24 under the theme «Alzad la mirada», focused on the accompaniment of people deprived of liberty, their families, and victims. The conclusion of the week also marked the publication of the Memoria de Pastoral Penitenciaria 2025 by the Conferencia Episcopal Española. According to the report, the Church provided direct contact to 40,289 people through chaplains, volunteers, parishes, religious congregations, and other ecclesial entities during 2025. These efforts included 1,076 programs conducted both inside and outside the centers. The report noted that there were 62,398 people in prison in Spain at the end of 2025.
