The Archdiocese of Madrid is a Latin Church metropolitan archdiocese in central Spain, established in 1885 as the Diocese of Madrid-Alcalá and elevated to an archdiocese in 1964. Its province includes the suffragan dioceses of Getafe and Alcalá de Henares, and it is led by Cardinal José Cobo Cano.

History

One of Spain's fourteen metropolitan archbishoprics, the Metropolitan Archdiocese of Madrid (Latin: Archidioecesis Metropolitae Matritensis) is a Latin archdiocese of the Catholic Church. Though Madrid has been the seat of the Spanish Crown since 1561, the diocese itself was created only in the late 19th century, becoming an archdiocese in 1991. José Cobo Cano has been archbishop of Madrid since 12 June 2023.

    Archbishop José Cobo Cano of Madrid congratulated the Diocese of Pamplona y Tudela on launching its 2026–29 pastoral plan, titled ¡Ponte en camino! During an event at the Diocesan Seminary attended by more than 400 people, Cobo Cano shared the launch with Archbishop Florencio Roselló Avellanas of Pamplona and Bishop of Tudela. Cobo Cano stated that synodality is part of the essence of the Church rather than a temporary trend. He described this approach as relational conversion, where priests recognize themselves as part of the people and laypeople move beyond being mere recipients of information. He noted that while responsibilities differ, everyone is necessary to the community. The Archbishop of Madrid emphasized the need to involve young people more deeply and to build teams capable of addressing new realities. He also noted that the Church must walk alongside the poor rather than simply existing for them. To support these goals, Cobo Cano suggested synodal training for future priests and the use of regular planning and evaluation to assess the results of pastoral work.
