History

Since 1986, when the diocese of Comacchio was joined to the historical archdiocese of Ferrara, the Catholic Church has counted the Archdiocese of Ferrara-Comacchio (Latin: Archidioecesis Ferrariensis-Comaclensis) among its Latin Church archdioceses. It is a suffragan of the archdiocese of Bologna. The episcopal seat moved in 657 from Vicohabentia (Voghenza) to the newly founded Ferrara; the earliest known bishop of Vicohabentia, Marcellinus, was consecrated c. 429-431.
