The cathedral
Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception stands in Hong Kong 香港, the church that holds the cathedra from which this see takes its name.
On what a cathedral is, see the cathedral; every see church on earth is gathered at the cathedrals.
History
The Diocese of Hong Kong (Chinese: 天主教香港教區; Latin: Dioecesis Sciiamchiamensis), a Latin Church diocese of the Catholic Church, takes its name from the see city, the metropolitan area where its bishop resides. On paper it is a suffragan of the Archdiocese of Guangzhou (Canton), yet in practice it answers immediately to the Holy See. In theory its territory also extends beyond Hong Kong to a small part of Guangdong province.

Synodality enters parish planning phase ahead of 2027 assembly in Hong Kong
The Catholic Diocese of Hong Kong has moved its synodal process into the parish planning phase to prepare for a diocesan assembly in February 2027. Eight pilot parishes are currently testing Conversations in the Spirit and are required to submit three year pastoral plans before Advent. More than 300 representatives from schools, religious institutes, youth groups, and migrant communities met at Wah Yan College in Kowloon on September 19 for the launch of Journeying Together in Synodality. Organized by the Diocesan Ad Hoc Committee for Synodal Development, the program seeks to increase participation among women, youth, and migrants. Cardinal Stephen Chow, S.J., stated that synodality is based on the shared baptismal dignity of clergy, religious, and laypeople. He explained that the process involves deep listening and discerning the guidance of the Holy Spirit rather than secular democratic voting or political lobbying. While hierarchical leaders retain final decision making authority, Chow said leaders must respect communal discernment and maintain mutual accountability.

Diocese of Hong Kong launches synodal journey
The Diocese of Hong Kong launched its synodal journey on Saturday, September 19, to prepare for a diocesan assembly on synodality scheduled for February 2027. The diocesan coordinating group recently attended a meeting in Bangkok, Thailand, from September 1 to 3, organized by the body promoting synodality within the Federation of Asian Bishops’ Conferences. This gathering included representatives from 21 ecclesial contexts across Asia. During the meeting, the Hong Kong working group shared its recent experiences and discussed the needs that prompted its current initiatives. Participants in the Bangkok meeting were encouraged to prioritize prayer, listening, and communal discernment over the search for quick answers or formal programs. The event included an activity titled "The synodal journey begins with friendship" to emphasize that walking together relies on personal encounters and mutual listening.
