History

On December 14, 2005, the Diocese of Maumere (Dioecesis Maumerensis) was carved out of the Archdiocese of Ende, which remains its metropolitan. Vincentius Sensi became its first bishop, and the St Joseph church in Maumere serves as the cathedral. The diocese covers 1,732 km2, matching the civil district Sikka on the eastern part of the island of Flores, Indonesia. As of 2005, 259,598 of the area's 270,000 people belonged to the Catholic Church, spread across 35 parishes.
