Samarinda is in fact a metropolitan archdiocese, not a diocese, covering eastern Kalimantan with suffragans Banjarmasin, Palangkaraya, and Tanjung Selor. Established as an apostolic vicariate in 1955, promoted to a diocese in 1961, and elevated to a metropolitan archdiocese on January 29, 2003.

History

Seated in the Indonesian city of Samarinda, this Roman Catholic archdiocese (Latin: Samarindaën(sis)) counts, besides its cathedral of St. Mary's in Samarinda, two further parishes serving the faithful: St. Luke's in Temindung (Paroki Santo Lukas Temindung) and the Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in Seberang (Paroki Hati Kudus Yesus).
