History

Catholic life in Indiana is served in part by the Archdiocese of Indianapolis (Latin: Archidioecesis Indianapolitana), whose story begins in 1834 with the erection of the Diocese of Vincennes. The see took the name Diocese of Indianapolis in 1898, and in 1944 it was raised to the rank of metropolitan archdiocese. Charles Thompson serves as its archbishop.
