Its seat is Myeongdong Cathedral of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception in Jung District, Seoul. As of 2020 it served 1,534,887 Catholics across 233 parishes with over 1,000 priests.

History

Covering the metropolitan area of Seoul, South Korea, the Metropolitan Archdiocese of Seoul (Latin: Archidioecesis Metropolitae Seulensis, Korean: 서울대교구) is a Latin Church metropolitan archdiocese whose province takes in parts of South Korea (a country with two further provinces) and the whole of North Korea; it nonetheless depends on the missionary Dicastery for Evangelization. The Archbishop of Seoul, its metropolitan bishop, resides at Myeongdong Cathedral in Jung-gu, Seoul.

  • Seoul prepares for 2027 World Youth Day

    More than 400 representatives from 100 nations concluded a preparatory meeting in Seoul to organize the 2027 World Youth Day. The gathering included participants from 160 dioceses, religious orders, and devotional groups across five continents. Cardinal Kevin Joseph Farrell, prefect of the Dicastery for Laity, Family and Life, attended the meeting and stated that the pilgrimage should begin within local dioceses and parishes rather than being limited to a single week of events. He noted that the faith was introduced to Korea by Korean students who discovered and spread the teachings of Christ. Archbishop Peter Chung Soon-taick, president of the organizing committee, expressed his hope that young people will have an experience in Seoul that goes beyond attending a large event. The meeting, which ended on September 17, provided practical guidance for those helping young people prepare for the upcoming gathering.
