The Diocese of Lira is a Latin Church diocese in northern Uganda, established in 1968 from the Diocese of Gulu. It is a suffragan of the Archdiocese of Gulu, led by Bishop Sanctus Lino Wanok since 2019.

History

Serving the Lango sub-region of northern Uganda, the Roman Catholic Diocese of Lira (Latin: Liren(sis)) is centered on the city of Lira within the ecclesiastical province of Gulu. Its territory spans eight civil districts over an area of 12,030 square kilometers.

  • Aketo Primary School Receives Support for Classroom Construction After Storm Damage

    Aketo Primary School has begun construction on a three-classroom block to replace structures destroyed by a storm in Apac District. The storm, which occurred about a month ago, destroyed the roofs of several classrooms and the head teacher’s office, leaving the school with insufficient space for its students. Father Stanslas Atipopo, the parish administrator of Gomi Sub-Parish in Lira District, secured financial assistance from friends in Germany to fund the project. The Lira Diocese is implementing the construction. Deputy Head Teacher Samson Olum said the delivery of construction materials provides relief to parents and learners because the government has not provided immediate support following the storm. Alex Ogota, the LC3 Chairperson of Ibuje Sub-County, confirmed that the donated materials have arrived at the school.

  • Bishop’s Pastoral Visit Emphasizes Eucharistic-Centred Life in Abongodyang Parish

    Bishop Sanctus Lino Wanok of Lira visited St. Joseph’s Catholic Parish in Abongodyang, Alebtong district, from September 18 to 20, 2026, to encourage families to live lives centered on the Eucharist and to strengthen the faith of local Christians. During the visit, Monsignor Valente Innocent Opio, the Vicar General of Lira Diocese, represented the bishop in meetings with parish leaders on September 18 and 19. These discussions focused on the Christian faith and the importance of parents prioritizing their children's education. On September 19, the visit included the opening of a new Eucharistic Centre at St. Tobias Corner Apala to bring pastoral services closer to local Christians. During the event, approximately 154 people received the Sacrament of Confirmation. Throughout the three-day visit, nearly 300 Christians were confirmed.
