History
Erected on 9 April 1968 and based in the town of Mananjary, this Latin Rite diocese in Madagascar stands under the Archdiocese of Fianarantsoa. Its territory extends over roughly 14,270 km (5,511 sq. miles). Figures from 2004 put the population at about 700,000, of whom 14.8% were Catholic, served by 35 priests, a ratio of one priest for every 2,962 Catholics. Since October 2000 the diocese has been led by Bishop José Alfredo Caires de Nobrega, SCI.
