The Archdiocese of Miami is the Latin Church metropolitan see covering Broward, Miami-Dade, and Monroe counties in Florida. Erected as a diocese in 1958 and elevated to archdiocese in 1968, it is the metropolitan for all of Florida and is led by Archbishop Thomas G. Wenski.

History
Established in 1958, the Archdiocese of Miami (Latin: Archidioecesis Miamiensis, Spanish: Arquidiócesis de Miami, Haitian Creole: Achidyosèz Miami) serves the Catholic Church in South Florida in the United States. It stands as the metropolitan see for the Ecclesiastical Province of Miami, a province that takes in all of Florida, while the archdiocese itself covers the counties of Broward, Miami-Dade and Monroe. Its mother church is the Cathedral of Saint Mary, and as of 2026 Thomas Wenski serves as archbishop.

Pope Leo XIV appoints Bishop Brendan Cahill as Bishop of Joliet
Pope Leo XIV has appointed Brendan J. Cahill as the new bishop of Joliet, Illinois. Archbishop Gabriele Caccia, the apostolic nuncio to the United States, announced the appointment on September 17, 2026. Bishop Cahill, who has led the Diocese of Victoria in Texas since 2015, succeeds Ronald A. Hicks. Hicks previously served as the bishop of Joliet for five years before being appointed archbishop of New York in December 2025. Since that time, Auxiliary Bishop Dennis E. Spies has served as the apostolic administrator for the Joliet Diocese. Cahill currently serves a three-year term as chairman of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops Committee on Migration. He was ordained a priest for the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston in 1990 and received his episcopal consecration in 2015. Archbishop Hicks described Cahill as a man of deep faith and a pastor for those on the margins, noting that his fluency in Spanish will benefit the diocese. The Diocese of Joliet plans to schedule Cahill's installation Mass for November.

Pope Leo XIV has appointed Bishop Brendan J. Cahill to lead the Diocese of Joliet in Illinois. Archbishop Gabriele G. Caccia, the apostolic nuncio to the United States, announced the appointment in Washington on Sept. 17. Bishop Cahill has served as the bishop of Victoria, Texas, since 2015. He also serves as the chairman of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops’ Committee on Migration, a role he began last November following a year as chairman-elect. He succeeds Archbishop Ronald A. Hicks, who was appointed archbishop of New York in December 2025. Since that time, Auxiliary Bishop Dennis E. Spies has served as the apostolic administrator for the Diocese of Joliet. Born in Coral Gables, Florida, Bishop Cahill studied at the University of St. Thomas in Houston, Xavier University in New Orleans, and the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome, where he earned a doctorate in dogmatic theology. He was ordained to the priesthood on May 19, 1990.
