Latin rite metropolitan archdiocese in Michoacan, Mexico, erected on 11 August 1536 as the Diocese of Michoacan, raised to a metropolitan archdiocese by Pope Pius IX on 26 January 1863, and renamed Morelia on 22 November 1924. Its seat is the Cathedral of the Transfiguration in Morelia. It is one of the oldest sees in the Americas.

History

Erected on 11 August 1536 as the Diocese of Michoacán, the Archdiocese of Morelia (Latin: Archidioecesis Moreliensis) serves western central Mexico. The archbishop's cathedra stands in the Cathedral of the Transfiguration in Morelia, the capital of Michoacán state, and the archdiocese also counts a minor basilica, the Basílica de Nuestra Señora de la Salud in Pátzcuaro, Michoacán de Ocampo.
