Latin rite apostolic vicariate in the Peruvian Amazon, established 5 February 1900 as the Apostolic Prefecture of San Leon del Amazonas from territory of the Diocese of Chachapoyas, promoted to apostolic vicariate on 22 February 1921 and renamed Iquitos on 1 August 1945. Its seat is the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist in Iquitos.

History
Originally the Apostolic Prefecture of San León del Amazonas, the Apostolic Vicariate of Iquitos (Latin: Vicariatus Apostolicus Iquitosensis) is a Latin Church pre-diocesan missionary jurisdiction in Amazonian northern Peru. Exempt immediately to the Holy See, it belongs to no ecclesiastical province. Its cathedral, the Catedral San Juan Bautista (St. John the Baptist), stands in the episcopal see of Iquitos.
