The Archdiocese of Caceres, seated in Naga City, is one of the oldest sees in the Philippines, founded in 1595 and elevated to a metropolitan archdiocese on June 29, 1951. It is the metropolitan see for the Bicol Region with suffragans Daet, Legazpi, Libmanan, Masbate, Sorsogon, and Virac.

History

A metropolitan see of the Latin Church in the Philippines, the Metropolitan Archdiocese of Cáceres presides over the Bicol Region as an ecclesiastical province. Its own direct territory takes in the third, fourth, and fifth congressional districts of Camarines Sur, together with the cities of Naga and Iriga and the municipality of Gainza.

    Archbishop Rex Andrew Alarcon of Caceres urged devotees to connect their devotion to Our Lady of Peñafrancia with environmental stewardship after low water levels in the Naga River delayed the annual fluvial procession on Saturday, Sept. 19. The procession, which honors the patroness of Bicol, began around 9 p.m. due to the unusually dry river. Archbishop Alarcon told Radyo Veritas that devotion should involve more than venerating the image and must include caring for what God has entrusted to humanity. He described Mary as a mother to the Church and to nature, linking the message to the Church's Season of Creation observed every September. Local authorities estimated that more than one million devotees attended the religious event despite the schedule adjustment.

  • Archbishop Charles Brown presides over Mass marking 75th anniversary of Archdiocese of Caceres

    Archbishop Charles Brown, the apostolic nuncio to the Philippines, presided over a Mass on Sept. 17 to mark the 75th anniversary of the Archdiocese of Caceres. The celebration took place at the Naga Metropolitan Cathedral compound. During the Mass, Brown described the Church as a shared journey where every member, including lay Catholics, families, priests, and bishops, holds a vital role. He compared the nature of the Church to a procession or caravan moving toward a common destination, noting that no one is unnecessary or excluded. Brown specifically identified parents as the most important people for passing the Catholic faith to younger generations. The anniversary Mass concluded the Union of Bicol Clergy gathering and coincided with the seventh day of the novena to Our Lady of Peñafrancia.
