Archdiocese of Puebla de los Ángeles

History

Mexico's oldest Catholic diocese is the Archdiocese of Puebla de los Ángeles (Latin: Archidioecesis Angelorum), a Latin Church ecclesiastical territory established on October 13, 1525 as the "Diocese of Tlaxcala". It kept that name until its elevation to an archdiocese in 1903. A new Diocese of Tlaxcala, created in 1959, is now suffragan to the Archdiocese of Puebla de los Ángeles.

  Pope Leo XIV has transferred Archbishop Jorge Carlos Patrón Wong from the Archdiocese of Jalapa to the Archdiocese of Puebla de los Ángeles in Mexico. The 68-year-old archbishop previously served as the head of the Archdiocese of Jalapa, which had 1,466,000 Catholics according to 2024 figures from the Annuario Pontificio. He now moves to the Archdiocese of Puebla de los Ángeles, which has 3,127,000 Catholics. While this archdiocese is smaller than the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, it is larger than any other diocese in the United States. Patrón Wong previously served as the secretary for seminaries in the Dicastery of the Clergy, a position he was named to by Pope Francis in 2013. He was also the bishop of Papantla before being named archbishop of Jalapa in 2021.

• Pope Leo XIV accepts resignations of two Mexican bishops

  Pope Leo XIV accepted the resignations of two Mexican bishops on September 21, 2026, and appointed successors for their respective sees. The Pope accepted the resignation of Víctor Valentín Sánchez Espinosa as archbishop of the Archdiocese of Puebla de los Ángeles. Jorge Carlos Patrón Wong, the current archbishop of Xalapa, will succeed him as the ninth archbishop of Puebla. The Archdiocese of Puebla stated that Sánchez Espinosa will serve as apostolic administrator until Patrón Wong takes office on November 19, 2026. The Pope also accepted the resignation of Fidencio López Plaza as bishop of the Diocese of Querétaro. Víctor Alejandro Aguilar Ledesma, currently the bishop of the Diocese of Celaya, will become the eleventh bishop of Querétaro. Both Sánchez Espinosa and López Plaza had reached the age of 75, the age at which diocesan bishops submit their resignations to the Pope.

  Pope Francis has accepted the resignation of Archbishop Víctor Valentin Sánchez Espinosa from his leadership of the Archdiocese of Puebla de los Ángeles, Mexico. The Pope appointed Archbishop Jorge Carlos Patrón Wong to succeed him as archbishop of Puebla de los Ángeles. Patrón Wong previously served in the diocese of Jalapa. Born in Mérida, Patrón Wong was ordained a priest for the Archdiocese of Yucatán in 1988. He served in various roles including parish vicar, professor, and rector of the Seminary of Yucatán. He was appointed coadjutor bishop of the Diocese of Papantla in 2009 and became its bishop in 2012. Within the Mexican Episcopal Conference, he has chaired the commission for vocations and ministries.
