Former Vatican official transferred to huge Mexican archdiocese (Vatican Press Office)

Pope Leo XIV has transferred Archbishop Jorge Carlos Patrón Wong from the Archdiocese of Jalapa to the Archdiocese of Puebla de los Ángeles in Mexico.

The 68-year-old archbishop previously led the Archdiocese of Jalapa, which had 1,466,000 Catholics according to 2024 figures from the Annuario Pontificio. His new assignment in Puebla de los Ángeles oversees 3,127,000 Catholics. While this archdiocese is smaller than the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, it is larger than all other dioceses in the United States.

Patrón Wong previously served as the secretary for seminaries in the Dicastery of the Clergy, a position he was appointed to by Pope Francis in 2013. He was also named the archbishop of Jalapa in 2021.
