The Diocese of Richmond is a Latin Rite diocese covering most of the Commonwealth of Virginia. Erected in 1820, it is a suffragan of the Archdiocese of Baltimore and is led by Bishop Barry C. Knestout, appointed in 2017.

History
Virginia is home to the Diocese of Richmond (Latin: Diœcesis Richmondiensis), a Latin Church diocese of the United States belonging to the province of the metropolitan Archdiocese of Baltimore. Its present bishop, Barry C. Knestout, received his appointment from Pope Francis on December 5, 2017.

Clergy Announcement – September 23, 2026
Bishop Michael F. Burbidge of the Diocese of Arlington announced several clergy changes on September 23, 2026. Reverend Ramon Dominguez, a priest from the Diocese of Fall River in Massachusetts, joined the Diocese of Arlington on September 21, 2026. Deacon Vincent M. Kapral, a permanent deacon from the Diocese of Richmond, also joined the Diocese of Arlington, effective September 12, 2026. Additionally, Reverend John T.B. Trong moved from the Saint Rose of Lima Priests’ Retirement Villa in Annandale to a private residence outside the Diocese of Arlington on September 22, 2026.

U.S. Bishops' Administrative Committee establishes Task Force on Artificial Intelligence
The Administrative Committee of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops established the Bishops’ Task Force on Preserving Human Dignity in the Age of Artificial Intelligence. Bishop Oscar Cantú of San Jose will chair the group. The committee formed the task force following an appeal from Pope Leo XIV in his encyclical, Magnifica humanitas, to build cooperation and shared responsibility. During a meeting with technology firm representatives and specialists, the committee discussed keeping artificial intelligence at the service of humanity and addressing the dangers the technology presents. Conference spokesperson Chieko Noguchi stated the bishops hope to identify how the Church can contribute to the moral foundation of AI models and how companies can protect against misuse and ensure human oversight. The discussion also addressed how the Church and the tech industry can work together to ensure technology remains human-centered, respects individual dignity, and benefits both the rich and the poor. Oscar Cantú noted that creators of these machines recognize serious threats and are looking to the Church for moral guidance. The membership of the task force has not yet been determined.
