Latin-rite apostolic prefecture covering Sakhalin Island in the Russian Far East, with origins as a mission sui iuris of Karafuto in 1932, promoted to apostolic prefecture in 1938 and renamed Yuzhno Sakhalinsk in 2002. Its principal church is the Church of St. James in Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk, and it is administered by the Bishop of Saint Joseph at Irkutsk, Cyryl Klimowicz.

History
On the Russian (formerly Japanese) Far Eastern island of Sakhalin, the Apostolic Prefecture of Yuzhno Sakhalinsk is a Latin Church missionary pre-diocesan jurisdiction. Exempt, meaning directly dependent on the Holy See rather than part of any ecclesiastical province, it answers to the Roman Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples and remains vacant, though under apostolic administration. The Church of St. James in Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk serves as its cathedral episcopal see.
