History

The city of Valencia in Venezuela is the seat of a Latin Church archdiocese known in Latin as Archidioecesis Valentinus in Venetiola.

  • Juan Arribas Paricio dies

    Juan Arribas Paricio, a priest of the Diocese of Valencia, died on Monday, September 21, 2026, at the age of 92. Born in Alba del Campo, Arribas Paricio studied in Barcelona and Rome before his ordination in Rome in 1957. He served the Church for 69 years, beginning his ministry as a parochial vicar at San Miguel Arcángel in Burjassot in 1968. He then served as a parochial vicar at San José in Torrent from 1968 to 1979, before becoming the parish priest of San Luis Bertrán in Torrent, a position he held until 1998. From 1998 until his retirement in 2005, he served as the chaplain of the General Hospital of Valencia. The Archdiocese of Valencia scheduled his funeral mass for Wednesday, September 23, at 16:30 at the San Luis Bertrán parish in Torrent. Archbishop Enrique Benavent will preside over the service. Arribas Paricio will be buried in the Panteón Sacerdotal of the Cementerio Parroquial de Torrent.

  • Diócesis de Valencia celebrates XXV Aniversario of beatification of mártires valencianos

    The Diocese of Valencia began commemorations for the 25th anniversary of the beatification of the Valencian martyrs with a colloquium on religious persecution in Spain during the 1930s. Organized by the Vicariate of Evangelization and the Delegation for the Causes of Saints, the event included historians, religious congregations, priests, and family members of the martyrs. During the discussion, Bishop Juan Antonio Martínez Camino of Madrid stated that the martyrdom of Christians was the most significant event in the history of the Church during the 20th century. He noted that the 20th century produced more martyrs than all previous Church history combined and suggested that honoring these witnesses provides the Church with evangelizing vigor. The anniversary events will conclude on Sunday, September 27, with a thanksgiving Mass at the Valencia Cathedral.
