Pope Leo XIV approved the election of Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle as the new dean of the College of Cardinals on October 8, 2026. Tagle, a 69-year-old Filipino cardinal, was chosen by the cardinal bishops to succeed 92-year-old Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re, who resigned from the position.
As dean, Tagle will hold the title of the suburbicarian see of Ostia while retaining his current title of Albano. He will continue his work as pro-prefect of the Section for First Evangelization and New Particular Churches within the Dicastery for Evangelization. Tagle becomes the first Asian prelate to serve as dean.
The dean is responsible for coordinating the work of the cardinal bishops and presiding over a conclave in the event of a papal death or resignation. This role includes summoning cardinals to Rome, leading daily meetings before and during a conclave, and asking the pope-elect if he accepts the election and which name he chooses.
Cardinal Re will serve as dean emeritus and will keep his titular church of Sabina-Poggio Mirteto. Under rules established by Pope Francis in 2019, the dean serves a five-year term that can be renewed once.
