Archbishop Paul S. Coakley, president of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, condemned a plan by the U.S. Department of War to livestream the execution of Nidal Hasan. Coakley described the decision to broadcast the firing squad execution as a barbaric promotion of a culture of death and urged officials to reconsider.
Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth stated on October 8 that the execution of Hasan, a former U.S. Army psychiatrist, would take place at Fort Hood on December 3 and would be made public for people to watch. Hasan was convicted for a 2009 mass shooting at Fort Hood that killed 13 people and injured 32 others.
Bishop Michael F. Burbidge joined Coakley in expressing shock at the plan, stating that capital punishment should never be turned into a public spectacle. Coakley noted that while Hasan's actions cannot be condoned, the public execution undermines the moral fabric of the nation.
