Bishop Nazzareno Marconi reopens Tolentino Cathedral

Bishop Nazzareno Marconi reopened the Cathedral of San Catervo in Tolentino during celebrations for the city's patron saint. The ceremony took place ten years after the 2016 earthquake that damaged central Italy. Following a ribbon cutting, Bishop Marconi presided over a Mass concelebrated by local priests and parish priest Gianni Compagnucci.

Marconi described the cathedral as a vital part of the local identity and a repository of centuries of history, noting it houses the sarcophagus of San Catervo, which dates back to the 4th century. He stated the building serves as a religious landmark and a resource for local tourism.

The current cathedral was started in 1822 by Saint Vincenzo Maria Strambi. Marconi noted this was Strambi's final project before he left for Rome to serve as a counselor and confessor to Pope Pius VII. Both Strambi and the Pope had faced persecution from Napoleon shortly before the dictator's death in 1821.
