Cardinal Parolin faces scrutiny for remarks on Pope Leo XIV’s pontificate

Catholic IntelligenceUpdated 1 min read

Cardinal Pietro Parolin is facing criticism within the Vatican following comments regarding the potential need for Pope Leo XIV to readjust his pontificate.

According to reporter Nico Spuntoni in Il Giornale, the Vatican Secretary of State made the remarks during an event at the embassy of Iraq to the Holy See. When asked by journalists about the Pope, Parolin stated that the Pope would readjust his pontificate if it were necessary to do so once doctors had completed their assessment. The following day at the Catholic University, Parolin said the Pope's recovery was going well but declined to interpret any future plans for the Pontiff.

Spuntoni described the comments as an unhappy remark that has caused unease among prelates and observers, noting that the statement was unexpected given Parolin's reputation for prudence. Critics cited in the report also expressed dissatisfaction with Parolin's frequent presence at congresses and his tendency to speak extensively with journalists.
