Diocese of San Sebastián opens first diocesan synod

Catholic IntelligenceUpdated 1 min read

The Diocese of San Sebastián began its first diocesan synod on Saturday, October 17, with a meeting at the diocesan seminary. Bishop Fernando Prado Ayuso convened the process under the motto "Zurekin – Contigo" to facilitate listening, reflection, and discernment regarding the future of the Church in Gipuzkoa.

The synod is scheduled to continue until at least 2028. The process includes priests, religious, laity, parishes, movements, schools, and Cáritas, as well as people who identify as Catholic or close to the Church but do not participate regularly. According to diocesan materials, the goal is not to confirm previous decisions but to open a period of dialogue.

The schedule consists of four stages. The diocese will collect input via paper and digital surveys prepared with the University of Deusto. Synodal groups will work from January to June 2027, followed by a synodal assembly starting in October 2027 to study proposals. Implementation of the findings is expected to begin in 2028.
