The Daughters of Charity and Sister Nieves receive the José Castiñeira Award
The Daughters of Charity of Saint Vincent de Paul and Sister Nieves Martínez de Osaba Sola received the third José Castiñeira Humanities Award during a ceremony at the Lugo Cathedral on October 25. The Orfeón Lucense established the award in memory of its founder, with support from the Diocese of Lugo and the Lugo Cathedral.
The jury awarded the Daughters of Charity for their work assisting people with physical and intellectual disabilities. The religious order has a long history of service in Lugo, specifically through the San Vicente de Paúl center for people with intellectual disabilities.
The award also recognizes Sister Nieves Martínez de Osaba Sola for her life of service in teaching, music, social action, and care for vulnerable people. She currently lives outside of Lugo and is approaching her 100th birthday. For several decades, she performed educational and assistance work that included using music to serve those in her care.
