Sister Carolyn Osiek, RSCJ, described the missionary legacy of Philippine Duchesne and the Society of the Sacred Heart during an interview in Saint Louis. Osiek, a New Testament scholar and former archivist for the Society of the Sacred Heart United States-Canada Province, noted that Duchesne arrived in North America in 1818.

Osiek stated that Duchesne originally intended to serve in China or Canada before arriving in the Mississippi Valley. At the time, Duchesne viewed the region as part of French colonial civilization rather than the United States. Osiek explained that Duchesne was part of a broader movement of French missionaries who made up the majority of Catholic missionaries globally by the end of the nineteenth century.

The discussion also connected this missionary history to Pope Leo XIV, who moved from Chicago to Peru and Rome. Osiek, who taught Robert Francis Prevost at the Catholic Theological Union in Chicago, addressed the achievements and the difficult history of the Society, including its involvement with slavery.

Approximately 500 faithful attend Sunday Mass at Christ the King Cathedral in the Diocese of Loikaw, according to Father Marko Phe Bya, the Vicar General and parish priest. Father Phe Bya reported the attendance figures to Agenzia Fides during the International Forum of Catholic Action in Rome.

The cathedral and the diocesan pastoral center were occupied by the military in November 2023. This occupation forced Bishop Celso Ba Shwe, priests, religious sisters, and the faithful to leave the area. During that period, the military used the cathedral compound as a base.

Father Phe Bya stated that the return of the community followed the resumption of pastoral life in the center of the diocese. The conflict in Myanmar's eastern Kayah State has displaced many communities through fighting and airstrikes.

In a homily published by The Jesuit Post, Bachmeier noted that people cannot love an invisible Creator while ignoring the visible needs of those around them.

Bachmeier connected the Gospel's two greatest commandments to instructions to protect the poor and not mistreat foreigners, widows, or orphans. He said that loving one's neighbor is not an optional assignment but is how people demonstrate love for God.

The Archdiocese of New York has reached a preliminary agreement to pay more than $800 million to approximately 1,300 people alleging sexual abuse by clergy and lay leaders. According to The New York Times, the settlement includes a minimum one-time payment of $250,000 for each claimant, though amounts may increase based on the severity of each case.

As part of the agreement, the archdiocese would publish and maintain an updated list on its website of the names of clergy and lay leaders against whom there are credible accusations. The settlement may also help the archdiocese avoid bankruptcy. To secure the agreement from remaining claimants, including heirs of deceased survivors, the archdiocese negotiated an additional $20 million from an insurer to be divided equally among them.

Lawyers for the claimants stated the deal was closed and approved by all affected parties. However, archdiocesan spokesperson Joseph Zwilling noted that the parties are still working to complete the agreement. This settlement follows a 2024 agreement by the Archdiocese of Los Angeles to pay $880 million to 1,000 victims.

Singaporean Sustainability and Environment Minister Grace Fu stated that haze originated from fires on lands belonging to seven companies in Indonesia. These companies are to receive preventive measure notices under the Transboundary Haze Pollution Act.

Briefing and sources: Pope Leo’s Amoris Laetitia Summit: Doctrinal Confusion and a Secret Final Report. The Remnant

Bishop Athanasius Schneider has criticized the apostolic exhortation Amoris Laetitia, stating that certain provisions regarding application criteria deviate from Catholic doctrine.

Schneider claims the document modifies the doctrine that mortal sin prevents grace and charity from remaining in the soul. He notes that the text suggests the Holy Spirit can provide gifts and charisms to divorced and civilly remarried people, allowing them to function as living members of the Church while living contrary to divine law. According to Schneider, the exhortation asserts that individuals in irregular situations may not always be in a state of mortal sin, even if they know the rule, due to difficulties in understanding its values or concrete situations that prevent them from acting differently. Schneider described the document as an attack on the holiness of the Eucharist.

Why the ideology of AI looks so much like religion

Briefing and sources: Why the ideology of AI looks so much like religion. Aleteia

The ideology surrounding artificial intelligence often uses language and concepts similar to religious belief, according to a report by Aleteia.

The report notes that in 2017, former Google and Uber engineer Anthony Levandowski filed paperwork in California to create a religious organization called Way of the Future. The group intended to develop and worship an artificial superintelligence referred to as the Godhead. Although the church has dissolved, the report suggests the underlying impulses remain present in modern discourse.

These impulses appear in descriptions of the future of AI, such as the concept of uploading a human mind to achieve immortality or resurrection. Additionally, the report states that iterations of effective altruism function as a redemption narrative, where followers donate money in hopes of securing a technologically stable future. This discourse frequently employs terms related to sacrifice, mission, and ultimate stakes.

Our Lady Star of the Sea in Cape May serves as a quiet space for prayer and Mass amidst the pedestrian traffic of a seaside resort mall, according to the Catholic Star Herald. Parish administrator Terry McGarvey noted that visitors enter the church throughout the day to pray, light candles, or attend Mass.

The parish pastor, Father John Dolan, OSFS, stated that the church is located in the center of the local shopping area. The current church building follows a history that began with Saint Mary’s, a small wooden mission located across the street from the present site. Talibon bishop urges action on synod proposals

Briefing and sources: Talibon bishop urges action on synod proposals. CBCP News

Bishop Patrick Daniel Parcon of Talibon urged priests and laypeople to implement the recommendations from the diocese's first diocesan synod to serve the poor and marginalized. During his homily at the closing Mass on Oct. 23, Parcon stated that the synod's proposals must result in practical changes in Church life rather than remaining as written documents.

The five-day assembly, which took place from Oct. 19 to Oct. 23 at Talibon Cathedral, included more than 220 delegates. Parcon emphasized that the diocese must become more inclusive and responsive to the needs of the people so that no one is excluded from pastoral care.

One specific outcome of the synod was the abolition of the diocese's arancel system. This system previously required fixed fees for receiving the sacraments. Parcon told Radyo Veritas that removing these fees eliminates financial barriers that prevent poor Catholics from accessing sacramental life.

Briefing and sources: Chaldean synod backs new procedure for electing bishops. The Pillar

The Synod of Bishops of the Chaldean Catholic Church has approved a new procedure for electing bishops to allow members more time to research and investigate candidates before voting. Patriarch Paul III Nona stated that the bishops reached this agreement during a synod assembly held in Rome from October 16 to 19.

The new mechanism will be implemented starting with the next synod. Patriarch Nona did not provide specific details regarding how the new process differs from the previous system.

The change follows recent leadership transitions within the Chaldean Church. Pope Leo XIV accepted the resignation of Cardinal Louis Raphaël I Sako and Bishop Emanuel Shaleta on March 10. Shaleta, who led the Eparchy of St. Peter the Apostle of San Diego, faces charges of money laundering and embezzlement.
