Pope Leo XIV appoints Jorge Carlos Patrón Wong as Archbishop of Puebla de los Ángeles

Pope Leo XIV has appointed Jorge Carlos Patrón Wong as the new archbishop of Puebla de los Ángeles, Mexico. The Holy See Press Office announced the appointment on September 21, 2026, following the acceptance of the resignation of Archbishop Víctor Valentín Sánchez Espinosa.

Patrón Wong previously served as the bishop of Papantla, a position he held since 2012 after serving as coadjutor bishop starting in 2009. Born in Mérida in 1958, he studied philosophy and theology at the Seminary of Yucatán and earned degrees in spiritual theology and psychology from the Pontificia Universidad Gregoriana de Roma.

After his ordination in 1988 for the Archdiocese of Yucatán, Patrón Wong held roles including parish priest, professor, and rector of the Seminary of Yucatán. He also served as president of the Organización de Seminarios Mexicanos and the Organización Latinoamericana de Seminarios.
