Pope Leo XIV reflects on Gaudium et spes
Pope Leo XIV continued his catechesis on the Second Vatican Council during a general audience on 7 October, focusing on the fourth chapter of the pastoral constitution Gaudium et Spes. The Pope discussed the Church's mission in the contemporary world, noting that the Church is not positioned above or beside the world but is implanted within it.
The Pope stated that the Church's primary mission is to help people address profound questions regarding the meaning of life, including human origins, destiny, love, and suffering. He explained that just as the Son of God became incarnate to fulfill a redemptive mission, the Church lives in the world as a sign of God's plan to reconcile humanity to himself.
The Pope emphasized that the Church's mission has a historical dimension and carries responsibility for how social relationships are shaped. He called on all baptized Christians to cooperate with the Holy Spirit to build a more just, peaceful, and fraternal world. He specifically noted that the lay faithful are called to bring a Christian spirit to the cultures in which they live.
