Pope Leo XIV says safety concerns about AI should be taken seriously
Pope Leo XIV said safety concerns regarding artificial intelligence should be taken seriously in his first encyclical, Magnifica Humanitas: On Safeguarding the Human Person in the Time of Artificial Intelligence.
The Pope's comments come as President Donald Trump pushes for the rapid development of AI and data centers. Following a meeting with tech executives at the White House, Trump stated that leaders agreed on Sept. 29 to establish voluntary safety standards for AI, which include allowing independent auditors to assess the technology. Trump also signed an executive order directing federal agencies to use the term "superintelligence" to refer to AI.
Public opinion remains divided on the technology's development. An Oct. 1 poll from The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research found that 31% of U.S. adults approve of how Trump is handling AI. While some Republican candidates have opposed the expansion of data centers, Trump told Time in an interview published Oct. 1 that he will not halt progress based on what he called phony threats.
