Pope Leo XIV appoints Cardinal Mauro Gambetti to lead the Archdiocese of Chieti-Vasto

Catholic Intelligence1 min read

Pope Leo XIV appointed Cardinal Mauro Gambetti as the archbishop of the Archdiocese of Chieti-Vasto, the Vatican announced Oct. 3.

Gambetti will succeed Archbishop Bruno Forte, who has led the archdiocese since 2004. Forte, who turned 77 in August, said Gambetti possesses the academic background and pastoral experience necessary to support evangelization and the care of the faithful. Forte plans to retire to his hometown of Naples.

The appointment requires Gambetti to leave his position as archpriest of St. Peter’s Basilica, a role he has held for five years. A member of the Order of Friars Minor Conventual, Gambetti was ordained a priest in 2000 and was named a cardinal and bishop by Pope Francis in 2020. His previous leadership roles include serving as the episcopal vicar of the Basilica of Saint Francis of Assisi and as a member of the Pontifical Commission for Vatican City State.
