History
Headquartered in Abakaliki, Nigeria, this Roman Catholic diocese came into being on 1 March 1973, when it was erected from territory belonging to the Diocese of Ogoja. The Right Reverend Thomas McGettrick SPS served as its first bishop. The Anglican Church of Nigeria also maintains a Diocese of Abakaliki with its own bishop.
