Apostolic Vicariate (not a diocese) covering the Comoros and Mayotte in the Indian Ocean, established as an apostolic administration in 1975 and raised to an apostolic vicariate on 1 May 2010. Exempt and directly subject to the Holy See, with its see at Moroni. Bishop Charles Mahuza Yava, S.D.S., is the vicar apostolic; Bishop Gilbert Aubry was named apostolic administrator in August 2024.

History

Between insular Madagascar and continental Africa, in the Indian Ocean, lies the Apostolic Vicariate of the Comoros Archipelago, a Latin missionary pre-diocesan jurisdiction of the Roman Catholic Church. Its territory takes in the Comoros and Mayotte, with a church in each, and its see rests at Moroni on the island of Grande Comore. The vicariate is exempt, answering directly to the Holy See rather than to any ecclesiastical province.
