History

Northern and western Maryland form the territory of the Archdiocese of Baltimore (Latin: Archidiœcesis Baltimorensis), the metropolitan see of the Ecclesiastical Province of Baltimore and a Latin Church jurisdiction of the Catholic Church in the United States. It holds the distinction of being both the oldest diocese and the oldest archdiocese in the country: erected soon after the American Revolution, the original diocese covered the entire United States before further dioceses were established.

The film features interviews with Archbishop Paul S. Coakley of Oklahoma City and Archbishop José H. Gomez of Los Angeles. These leaders discuss the pastoral value of spending time with Jesus. The documentary also includes personal testimonies from people whose lives were changed by Eucharistic exposition and examines why young people are drawn to adoration. Viewers will see footage from various locations, including a Chicago parish, Times Square in New York City, and Vienna, Austria. The film also uses archival footage of St. Teresa of Kolkata.

  • Pope Leo XIV celebrates Mass in Paris

    Pope Leo XIV celebrated Mass at the Place de la Concorde in Paris on September 26, 2026, addressing a crowd of approximately 800,000 people. Attendees lined the Champs Elysees from the Arc de Triomphe to the square to participate in the liturgy. During his homily, the pope urged the people of France to find true happiness and peace by following Jesus. He described Christ as the source of living water capable of satisfying a deep human thirst for meaning, truth, fulfillment, and communion with God. He encouraged families, young people, and the wider Christian community to share the Gospel in places experiencing loneliness or spiritual dryness. Six altar servers with Down syndrome assisted during the Mass. Participants waited for hours, sometimes in drizzling rain, to attend the event.

  • Pope Leo prays in Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris 7 years after devastating fire

    Pope Leo XIV led prayers inside Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris on Sept. 25, marking his first visit to the landmark since the 2019 fire. Archbishop Laurent Ulrich of Paris and Msgr. Olivier Ribadeau Dumas, the rector of Notre Dame, welcomed the pope to the cathedral, which reopened to the public in December 2024. During the visit, the pope knelt to pray before the tabernacle and the chapel housing the relic of Christ’s crown of thorns, which he kissed. Speaking in French to gathered bishops, priests, deacons, and religious men and women, Pope Leo XIV encouraged Catholics in France to act as living stones of a Church that demonstrates how God restores and heals humanity. He stated that the cathedral's rebirth serves as an impetus for the faithful to pursue holiness and their daily missions. The Holy See Press office reported that approximately 300,000 people greeted the pope as he traveled through Paris from the UNESCO headquarters to the Place Saint-Michel. Church bells rang throughout the city to mark his arrival in the French capital.
