The Diocese of Araçuaí is a Latin Church diocese in the Vale do Jequitinhonha region of Minas Gerais, Brazil, erected on August 25, 1913 from the Diocese of Diamantina. Geraldo dos Reis Maia was installed as bishop on August 17, 2024.

Seated in the city of Araçuaí within Brazil's ecclesiastical province of Diamantina, this diocese (Latin: Dioecesis Arassuahyensis) has the Cathedral of Saint Joseph in Araçuaí as its mother church. As of 2025 its bishop is Geraldo dos Reis Maia.

Priests Adilson and José Carlos concelebrated the liturgy. The Diocese of Araçuaí noted that the city became the seat of a new diocese in 1913. That original territory included the areas now covered by the Diocese of Almenara and the Diocese of Teófilo Otoni, as well as the current lands belonging to the Diocese of Araçuaí.

    Pope Leo XIV will ordain Monsignor José Paulino Francisco Neto as the bishop of the Diocese of Porto Nacional. The episcopal ordination is scheduled for November 28, 2026, at 9 a.m. at the Metropolitan Cathedral of Vitória in Espírito Santo. José Paulino Francisco Neto will assume leadership of the Diocese of Porto Nacional on December 19. The ordination will be led by Bishop Dario Campos, OFM, bishop emeritus of the Archdiocese of Vitória; Bishop Andherson Franklin Lustosa de Souza, auxiliary bishop of Vitória; and Bishop Geraldo dos Reis Maia, bishop of the Diocese of Araçuaí. Born in Comercinho on August 30, 1972, José Paulino Francisco Neto was ordained a priest on August 4, 2000. He previously served in various roles within the Diocese of Araçuaí, including parish priest in Catuji and Coronel Murta, rector of the diocesan seminary, and chancellor of the curia. Since 2020, he has served in the Archdiocese of Vitória.

  • São João Paulo II publishes Laborem Exercens
