History

A metropolitan see of the Latin Church in southeast Brazil, the Archdiocese of Niteroi (Nictheroy) (Latin: Archidioecesis Nictheroyensis) covers the city of Niterói in Rio de Janeiro state. Its archiepiscopal seat is the Metropolitan Cathedral of St. John the Baptist in downtown Niterói. The city also holds the Minor Basilica of Nossa Senhora Auxiliadora, dedicated to Our Lady of Perpetual Help, and a future cathedral by Guanabara Bay is set for completion: the Nova Catedral São João Batista (New Cathedral of Saint Hohn the Baptist).
