Building relationships with God, one camper at a time
Four young women from Vermont served as camp counselors at Camp Guggenheim in New York this summer. Among the counselors were sisters Lucia and Rafaella Bind-Matarazzo from Charlotte. Lucia is a junior at Butler University, while Rafaella is a sophomore at Providence College. The counselors described the camp as a welcoming environment where campers feel loved. Lucia noted that some younger campers expressed interest in the priesthood during their time at the camp, and she mentioned that several staff members are currently discerning vocations. The Diocese of Ogdensburg considers the camp a significant location for vocational growth. Darcy Fargo, the director of communications for the diocese, said that seminarians often describe the camp as a major part of their formation.

Elaine Beam retires as principal of St. Michael School
Elaine Beam retired as principal of St. Michael School in Brattleboro this past July after 17 years in the role. During her tenure, Beam led the school through a period of growth that included renewing its accreditation, paying off debts, and building an endowment. She also oversaw the reopening of the high school and led the effort to join the Chesterton Schools Network, which implements a classical curriculum combining liberal arts with Christian virtues. To strengthen the school's Catholic identity, Beam moved her office to a central location and converted her former office space into a chapel. She used the chapel as a space for students to reflect during behavioral discussions.

A continuous journey of vocation
David Young, the Catholic school superintendent for the Diocese of Burlington, described vocation as an ongoing journey rather than a single decision. Writing for the Diocese of Burlington, Young noted that vocations are shaped by personal experiences, relationships, and challenges. He observed that while some educators recognize their path early, others discover it through unexpected opportunities or the encouragement of others. Young stated that a vocation is not limited to a person's profession but involves how they serve others. He noted that the responsibilities of teachers, principals, and parents extend beyond their specific roles to include bringing faith and compassion to those around them.
