History

When the Diocese of Prince-Albert-Saskatoon was split on 9 June 1933, the Diocese of Saskatoon (Latin: Dioecesis Saskatoonensis) came into being as a suffragan of the Archdiocese of Regina. It lies in Saskatchewan, a civil province on the Canadian Prairies. Mark Hagemoen is the current bishop, taking office after Pope Francis named the previous bishop, Donald Bolen, Archbishop of Regina on July 11, 2016.

• Saskatoon Conference Marks Major Step in the Development of Catechesis in Canada

  More than 50 catechists from across Canada met in Saskatoon from Sept. 4 to 6 for the first Canadian Catechist Conference. During the event, Bishop Michael Smolinski of the Eparchy of Saskatoon announced the establishment of the first Ukrainian Catholic Catechetical School in Canada, which will be based at the Cathedral of St. George. The gathering grew from the National Catechists Group, an initiative of the Patriarchal Commission in Canada. For the past year, this group has held monthly online sessions to help catechists exchange ideas and build relationships. Attendees included Bishop Michael Kwiatkowski of New Westminster, who serves as Head of the Patriarchal Catechetical Commission, and Bishop David Motiuk of Edmonton. Nazar Duda, the Director of the Catechetical-Pedagogical Institute of the Ukrainian Catholic University in Lviv and Deputy Head of the Patriarchal Catechetical Commission, also participated.

• Bishop Pierre Goudreault presents President's Annual Report to Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops

  Bishop Pierre Goudreault presented the President’s Annual Report to the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops during the opening of their annual Plenary Assembly in Montreal on Sept. 21, 2026. The report reviewed the activities and achievements of the conference since the 2025 meeting. Key developments highlighted in the report include the transfer of 62 cultural artifacts from the Vatican Museums to the National Indigenous Organizations and the Inuvialuit Regional Corporation. This gift from Pope Leo XIV is part of efforts toward healing and reconciliation between the Catholic Church and Indigenous Peoples. Other highlighted achievements include the continued implementation of synodality in Canada, the creation of a national Service for Migrant and Refugee Ministry, and efforts to increase engagement with the federal government. During the assembly, the bishops also approved a letter to Pope Leo XIV. • Diocese of Saskatoon to host Fall Congress

  The Diocese of Saskatoon will host its Fall Congress on Wednesday, Oct. 14, 2026, at the Cathedral of the Holy Family. The event runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and is open to clergy, staff, lay leaders, parishioners, and the general public. The congress theme is Preparing the Way – The Church’s Mission for 2033. Keynote speakers Brett Powell and Eric Myatt from Divine Renovation will speak about preparations for the 2033 Jubilee, which marks 2,000 years since the Resurrection of Jesus Christ. Registration costs $30 and includes lunch.
