History

Pope Leo XIII created the Diocese of Chiavari (Latin: Dioecesis Clavarensis) on 3 December 1892 through the Bull Romani Pontifices. A Latin diocese of the Catholic Church in Liguria, northern Italy, it is a suffragan of the Archdiocese of Genoa.

  • Diocese of Chiavari to include Val d’Aveto on November 15

    The Val d’Aveto will officially join the Diocese of Chiavari on November 15. This change follows the conclusion of the process at the Holy See, where Archbishop Filippo Iannone, Prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops, signed the decree. The decree was sent to Italian authorities to ensure the transfer is recognized under civil law. Bishop Giampio Devasini stated that the move is a historical step for the communities in Val d’Aveto. The Diocese of Piacenza-Bobbio had previously considered transferring the area to Chiavari because many residents in the valley use services in the Tigullio region for school, work, and healthcare. The move also places the territory closer to Chiavari to allow for more direct pastoral care.

  • Diocese of Chiavari starts teacher training

    Catholic religion teachers from state and private schools began a diocesan training program on September 18 at the parish of Ri basso in Chiavari. The course, titled "St. Francis in Our Time: The Relevance of Thought and Educational Challenges," was organized by the Diocese of Chiavari School Office in collaboration with the Scuola di Formazione Teologica. Don Alberto Gastaldi, the head of the National IRC Service of the CEI, celebrated the Mass that opened the program. Renzo Ronconi, the principal of the I.C. Della Torre of Chiavari, spoke about Franciscan pedagogy and modern educational challenges.
