The Archdiocese of Chicago, erected as a diocese in 1843 and elevated to an archdiocese in 1880, serves Cook and Lake counties in Illinois. It is the metropolitan see of the Ecclesiastical Province of Chicago and has been led by Cardinal Blase J. Cupich since 2014.

History
Serving more than 2 million Catholics across Cook and Lake counties, an area of 1,411 square miles (3,650 km2) in Northeastern Illinois, the Archdiocese of Chicago (Latin: Archidiœcesis Chicagiensis) began as a diocese erected by the Vatican in 1843 and was raised to an archdiocese in 1880. Its archbishop is Cardinal Blase Joseph Cupich, and the cathedral parish is Holy Name Cathedral in Chicago. As metropolitan see of the province of Chicago, it stands at the head of all the dioceses in Illinois.
